  2. Finish the first pass in 15 minutes. You should have attempted about 25 questions as a rough guide by this point.

  3. Second pass. Chase flagged items in order of perceived difficulty, not original order, to maximise accuracy.

  4. Final Minute- Confirm every question has an answer—an informed guess is always better than leaving it blank.


Tip #2 - One-Look Estimation & Rounding

Exact arithmetic is slow; estimation lands you within the correct multiple-choice option 70-80 % of the time and slashes calculator usage.


Step-by-step method

  1. Identify the scale. Is the graph axis in thousands? Millions? Adjust eyes and round.

  2. Round sensibly. 378 → 380; 5.97 → 6.0. Keep one significant figure more than the tightest option range.

  3. Multiply/divide mentally. Use friendly numbers (e.g., 380 × 3 ≈ 1,140).

  4. Compare to options. Pick the only figure in the same ballpark.

  5. If two options are close, then calculate precisely. Otherwise move on.

Tip #3 -The Fraction–Percentage Conversion Grid


Why it matters

QR throws heaps of fraction/percentage questions; having benchmarks like 1/6 = 16 ⅔ % at your fingertips slashes mental load.

  1. Learn the “12-pack” grid. Memorise 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 … up to 1/12 and their percentages.

  3. If high, try a lower option; if low, a higher one. Two checks usually solve it.

  4. Mark and proceed. Avoid over-checking after confirmation.

Tip #7 - One-Line Unit Conversions


Why it matters

Unit traps (cm ↔ m, kg ↔ g) cause avoidable errors. A tidy one-line approach keeps everything visible.


Step-by-step method

  1. Write the target unit on the far right of your whiteboard. E.g., “m ²”.

  2. Start with the given value on the left. E.g., “240 cm ²”.

  3. Insert the conversion factor as a fraction. 1 m = 100 cm → multiply. It is incredibly helpful to know compile a list of conversion factors to memorise and practice before exam day


Tip #8 - Flag-and-Guess Like a Pro and leave no question not answered


Why it matters

Guessing strategically maximises expected score—random guessing still yields 1/5 odds, but educated guessing does EVEN better.


Step-by-step method

  1. Flag questions taking >45 s especially those with no progress.

  2. Before moving on, eliminate absurd options. Narrow to 2-3 choices.

  3. Flag colour-code mentally. Amber = likely solve later; Red = guess and forget.

  4. Return in last 90 s. If unsolved, pick the option closest to your earlier estimate.

  5. Never leave blanks. Every question is free lottery money—take it.


Tip #9 - Mental-Maths


Why it matters

Every visit to the on-screen calculator costs precious seconds; over 36 questions those clicks add up to minutes. A tight set of mental-maths shortcuts lets you answer at least a third of QR items without touching the keypad—keeping your flow unbroken and your score climbing.


Step-by-step method

  1. Master the “friendly-number” shift.Round one number up and the other down so the product stays almost identical (e.g., 48 × 19 → 50 × 19 – 2 × 19 = 950 – 38 = 912). Works brilliantly when options are far apart.

  2. Exploit the ×11, ×25, ×75 tricks.

    • ×11: Add adjacent digits (43 → 4 | 4+3 | 3 = 473).

    • ×25: Quarter the number, then add two zeros (160 × 25 → 40 00 = 4,000).

    • ×75: Multiply by 3, then divide by 4 (32 × 75 → 96 ÷ 4 = 24).

  3. Halve-and-double for awkward fractions. Converting 3/8 of 640? Halve twice (640 → 320 → 160) then times three = 480. No calc required.

  4. Use the ‘percentage swap.’Remember a % of b = b % of a. So 4 % of 250 = 250 % of 4 = 10—much quicker.
